Adult Women Should Not Travel Without a Male Guardian

Sahih Bukhari 3:85, Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas – The Prophet said, “A woman should not travel except with a with a guardian (mahram), and no man may visit her except in the presence of a guardian (mahram)” A man got up and said, “O Allah’s Apostle! I intend to go to such and such an army and my wife wants to perform Hajj.” The Prophet said (to him), “Go along with her (to Hajj).”

  • Comprehensive list of mahrams: father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, great-grandfather, great-grandmother and so on; brother, sister; son, grandson, great-grandson, daughter, grand-daughter, great-grand-daughter; uncle, aunt, great-uncle, great-aunt, and so on; nephew, niece, grandnephew, grandniece, great-grandnephew, great-grandniece and so on; father-in-law, mother-in-law; son-in-law, daughter-in-law, stepfather, stepmother; stepson, stepdaughter; and any of these same categories of relatives related to a person through a milk mother.
