Muhammad Thinks that the Sun Revolves Around the Earth

June 15, 2011

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 53, Number 353: Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, “A prophet amongst the prophets carried out a holy military expedition, so he said to his followers, ‘Anyone who has married a woman and wants to consummate the marriage, and has not done so yet, should not accompany me; nor should a man who has built a house but has not completed its roof; nor a man who has sheep or shecamels and is waiting for the birth of their young ones.’ So, the prophet carried out the expedition and when he reached that town at the time or nearly at the time of the ‘Asr prayer, he said to the sun, ‘O sun! You are under Allah’s Order and I am under Allah’s Order O Allah! Stop it (i.e. the sun) from setting.’ It was stopped till Allah made him victorious.

Then he collected the booty and the fire came to burn it, but it did not burn it. He said (to his men), ‘Some of you have stolen something from the booty. So one man from every tribe should give me a pledge of allegiance by shaking hands with me.’ (They did so and) the hand of a man got stuck over the hand of their prophet. Then that prophet said (to the man), ‘The theft has been committed by your people. So all the persons of your tribe should give me the pledge of allegiance by shaking hands with me.’ The hands of two or three men got stuck over the hand of their prophet and he said, “You have committed the theft.’ Then they brought a head of gold like the head of a cow and put it there, and the fire came and consumed the booty. The Prophet added: Then Allah saw our weakness and disability, so he made booty legal for us.”

* The prophet in the story thinks that the sun moves and asks that it be stopped from setting. He thinks that the sun revolves around the Earth. He fails to realize that this is an optical illusion – it is the Earth that is actually moving. Muhammad believes in this as well, as he narrates the story as a true story.

* Did the prophet in the story actually think that the Sun can listen to his appeal?

* The Sun has a gravitational pull on the Earth and the other planets which keeps them in their orbits. The implications of a celestial body coming to a full stop are huge.

* The absurdity of the story is noteworthy. The Sun is stopped so that this prophet could have enough light to finish a battle?

Sahih Muslim, Book 001, Number 0297: It is narrated on the authority of Abu Dharr that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) one day said: Do you know where the sun goes? They replied: Allah and His Apostle know best. He (the Holy Prophet) observed: Verily it (the sun) glides till it reaches its resting place under the Throne. Then it falls prostrate and remains there until it is asked: Rise up and go to the place whence you came, and it goes back and continues emerging out from its rising place and then glides till it reaches its place of rest under the Throne and falls prostrate and remains in that state until it is asked: Rise up and return to the place whence you came, and it returns and emerges out from it rising place and the it glides (in such a normal way) that the people do not discern anything ( unusual in it) till it reaches its resting place under the Throne. Then it would be said to it: Rise up and emerge out from the place of your setting, and it will rise from the place of its setting. The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said. Do you know when it would happen? It would happen at the time when faith will not benefit one who has not previously believed or has derived no good from the faith.

* Muhammad is distinctly talking about the movement of the sun. It glides until it reaches a resting place, then rises after having rested awhile. He thinks that the sun is revolving around the Earth.

* The Throne of God is described by Muhammad, in other reports, to be beyond the 7 heavens which are themselves beyond the “ceiling” (firmament) of space. Thus, for the Sun to rest in front of this Throne daily, it would have to travel outside of our galaxy, and in fact outside of all 100 billion galaxies in the universe to reach it. We know that this absolutely does not take place. If the Sun were to leave our solar system, we would be finished. Not only is Muhammad wrong about the movement of the Sun, but he fails to realize how large the universe actually is.

Quran 36:40 It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor doth the night outstrip the day. They float each in an orbit.

* Muhammad likens the orbit of the Sun to the orbit of the Moon. The Sun comes out in the daytime and the Moon at night, both orbiting the Earth.

Quran 36:38 And the sun runs to its resting place. That is the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing

* Where does the Sun go at night? To its resting place. The Sun goes to the Throne of God and rests there until it’s time to come out again. Muhammad believes that it is the Sun that is moving around the Earth.

Isn’t it also found in Islamic scripture (not sure if in Koran or Hadith) that Muhammad watched the sun set in a muddy swamp at the far end of the earth in a land inhabited by a mysterious clan of people?

And the moon used to be like the sun, before the wings of Angel Gabriel snuffed it out – and the markings on the moon (actually crators) were evidence of the damage caused by Gabriel’s wings?

It’d be interesting to see these additional “beliefs” explored in more detail. Thanks!

    • The Qur’an itself says that the sun sets in a pool of mud

Not quite, “Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it set in a spring of murky water: Near it he found a People: We said: “O Zul-qarnain! (thou hast authority,) either to punish them, or to treat them with kindness.”-Sura 18:86. The story is likely about Alexander the “Great“ the Koran retells a story about him that was known in Arabia in the time of Muhammad. http://youtu.be/FUqWA-TCaWg Gives you more infomation, please take the time to watch it.

  2. Great article, great site! I use those same hadiths in my article about the sun setting in a muddy spring: http://quranspotlight.wordpress.com/articles/dhul-qarnayn-sunset-sunrise/
It includes some details about the Arabic words used in that Sahih Muslim #297 hadith. I’m going to post a link to your blog on an ex-Muslims forum. You have an excellent collation of silly hadiths!

When Islamic God was shouting from the roof top that ‘Earth is center of the planets and sun is revolving the earth ‘, but it was in India, 9 centuries before from the time of Islamic God was born with his one and only representative, Mohamad, Hindu scientists like Aryabhatta and Bhaskara had even finished the calculation of the distance between Sun and the Earth, Earth and the Moon and had concluded Sun was the centre of solar system.Any one can check these facts by googling. One will get shocked how accurately Aryabhatta had calculated the distance between the sun and the earth. India has named a rocket, Aryabhatta to mark of respect such a wonderful ancient Hindu scientist.
